Cardiology

Training objectives
  1. To enable the trained physicians being proficient in the diagnosis and treatment of various cardiovascular diseases, acute and severe illnesses.
  2. To enable trained physicians to study the operation and interpretation of non-invasive and invasive examinations related to cardiovascular department.
  3. To train cardiologists and guide them to study clinical and basic academic research to cultivate clinical talents and teachers in cardiology.
Training methods
  1. Under the guidance of cardiologists, assist in taking care of general patients in the emergency department and patients in the cardiac intensive care unit.
  2. To carry out cardiology related examinations step by step in a systematic way, and be guided with essentials and interpretation principles by specialists in the operation.
  3. Under the guidance of senior specialist physicians, conduct periodic review of literature, learning to collect and organize information and essay writing.
  4. The training period is two years. The first year focuses on clinical and administrative work in diagnostics and therapeutics, and the second year involves academic research work and study in addition to clinical practice.
Training content

(1) Patient care:

A.General ward:
To participate in the attending physician’s patient return visits, grasp the status of all patients, and assist and guide the first to third year residents to take care of patients.
B.Cardiac Intensive Care Unit:
Under the supervision and guidance of attending cardiologists, assist the residents in handling and scheduling critically ill patients, and be responsible for the implementation of emergency non-invasive (such as ultrasound) and invasive examinations and treatment (such as the placement of pulmonary artery catheterization and pericardiocentesis, etc.)
C.Treatment of emergency patients:
To cooperate with the cardiologists to take turns on call for 24 hours to handle the emergency notes of the whole hospital at any time, including emergent ultrasound examination and placement of temporary pacemaker or emergent cardiac catheterization.。

(2) Training for inspection items:

A. Electrocardiogram (ECG), Exercise Electrocardiogram (ECG), and 24-hour Holter:
  a. To draft the findings of all cases daily reviewed by a cardiologist to complete the report.
  b. To participate in a ECG seminar guided by the cardiology physician once a week.
B. Cardio echo examination:
  a. The first-year training: be familiar with the principle, operation skills and clinical application of ultrasonic examination, and learn the essentials of its interpretation.
  b. The second-year training: under the guidance of a cardiologist, perform operations and interpretation independently, and be responsible for the implementation of emergent ultrasound or transesophageal echocardiography (TEE)examination.
C. Cardiac catheterization:
  a. The first-year training: be familiar with the theoretical basis of cardiac catheterization, indications and prevention and treatment of its complications, and gradually perform right and left cardiac catheterization and coronary angiogram under the guidance of a cardiologist.
  b. The second-year training: to perform coronary angiogram and interventional therapy under the guidance of a specialist physician, and perform electrophysiologic study (EPS) and treatment.
  c. To participate in the joint conference of cardiology and cardiovascular surgery discussion hosted by the director of the cardiology department once a week, responsible for reporting the findings of cardiac catheterization, to strengthen their interpretation ability, and to be familiar with the indications of cardiovascular surgery.
D. Electrophysiology and device therapy:
  a. The first-year training: be familiar with the theoretical basis of electrophysiology, the indications of examination and placement of the pacemaker, and prevention and treatment of ablation complications. To perform access puncture, interpretation of intracardiac electrogram under the guidance of an instructor in the cardiac electrophysiology department.
  b. The second-year training: Under the guidance of an instructor in the cardiac electrophysiology department, learn the placement of pacemaker, the placement of transvenous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) and the software settings, and the placement of pacemaker by performing cardiac re-synchronization therapy (CRT) and learn to optimize functions.
  c. To participate in the electrophysiology conference once fourth a month, be responsible for reports and explanations, and strengthen the interpretation ability through the guidance and discussion of senior experts in electrophysiology.

(3)Academic research:

A. ournal reading:
Hold regular study events to systematically understand the full picture of cardiovascular medicine, and participate in the regularly held journal club. The attending physician specifies or chooses a topic to review the literature (at least once a year) to grasp the latest developments of cardiovascular medicine.
B. Thesis writing study:
Under the guidance of senior attending physicians, choose topics of interest, collect case data, conduct research, analysis and statistics, and learn to write papers, or choose cases of interest and study the writing of case reports.
C. Basic and clinical research:
Under the guidance of senior attending physicians, perform laboratory operations or database analysis, and learn how to write and revise papers to enrich the ability of self-research.
Assessment All cardiologists and department directors are assessed based on their overall learning attitude and work performance, as well as the number and quality of cardiology department examination items (including cardiac echography, electrocardiogram and cardiac catheterization, etc.) completed by their operators. Those who pass the test are issued with the cardiology specialist training certificate by the department director and the hospital.
Regular teaching Discussion activities
